About Mila Moroko

I am a London-based contemporary painter working primarily in oil. Painting has become my way of giving form to states and emotions that are often difficult to express in words.

My work moves between figurative painting, portraiture, botanical subjects and more atmospheric compositions. Although these subjects may appear different, I return repeatedly to the same ideas — memory, inner states, femininity, light, transformation and the emotional power of colour.

The female figure holds a particular place in my work. I am interested not in portraying an ideal of beauty, but in the complexity of presence: vulnerability and strength, sensuality and distance, confidence and uncertainty. A face or figure can become a landscape of its own, carrying traces of experience that are not immediately visible.

I work through layers of colour, expressive brushwork and texture, allowing each painting to develop gradually rather than following a fixed formula. Sometimes the starting point is a person, sometimes a flower, a piece of music, a memory or the work of an artist from the past. What interests me is the moment when the original subject begins to transform into something more personal.

Light is another recurring element in my paintings. It can describe the physical world, but it can also suggest memory, silence, hope, distance or an inner shift that cannot be represented literally.

My aim is not to tell the viewer exactly what to see. I prefer to leave enough space for a painting to acquire another meaning through the experience of the person looking at it.
